Do you want to talk about what I was able to accomplish this week? Do you want to that? Do you really want to do that? Fine. Let’s do that.

I managed to hydrate and rest, so that’s cool. And I felt pretty good most of the week. However, I got partially soaked at yesterday’s Mardi Gras parade and now feel pretty gross again.

“But Pete,” you say, assuming a level of intimacy about which I’m unsure I feel, “that was yesterday. You had all week to fix the reelshot issue, research paranormal goings-on in Appalachia, and draw concept art.” And you’d be right, snookums (see, how do you like it?), except I spent most of the week prepping for next week’s Mardi Gras break. Grade reports were due, PowerPoints needed to be made, assignments needed to be made, all that fun stuff. And it all got done, but it cut into my normal workweek morning game development time.

I didn’t get nothing done, just not a lot.

That’s part of the normal ebb-and-flow of being an amateur game developer. And man, am I still very much an amateur.

What did I do?

So, what did I actually get accomplished? Not a lot that’s tangible, I’m afraid. In fact, the only real tangible output this week was this:

An orange pencil drawing of a girl in overalls.
Yes, I used my phone to take a picture of my iPad screen. Yes, the hands aren't done. Leave me alone I was sick.

I’m homing in on Zel’s design, and I think I like where I’m going. She’s a bit stocky, a bit matter-of-fact, and rough-and-tumble. That suits how I’m writing her perfectly. She’s not heartless by any stretch, it’s just that the care she has for people pushes her towards more. . . physical methods of protection.

But that may be giving too much away right now.

What did I learn?

I spent most of my game development time researching aspects of Appalachian paranormal activity about which I was unfamiliar. I knew quite a bit about tales of fairies, and aliens, and granny magic, but didn’t realize some people had already attempted to tie all those together. It’s not how I’d have done it, and not how I plan to do it, but it’s neat to see others have made some of the same logic leaps I have.

I also learned a bit about the Nûñnë'hï. That link sure is fascinating. It suuure is.

What’s next?

I slept thirteen hours last night and look to log at least eight tonight. I have a week off, a coffee pot, and an alarm set for 3:45 AM (same as always). I’m going to get up, drink coffee, meditate, and get to work. The form that work will take will be outlined tomorrow but, for right now, I’m just excited to get back into a groove.

See you tomorrow and, as always, thanks for joining me on the journey! And, hey, I'd be especially thankful if you subscribed to the Pete Makes Games newsletter!
