Hey, sooo, thanks for checking in on me, I know you’re excited to see how I’m doing, see what all I’ve accomplished since Monday, that’s truly kind of you and I appreciate it, yes, I’m feeling much better after prioritizing rest, oh, how much did I get done, that’s a great question, did you watch the Super Bowl, no, me neither, no, I’m not evading the question okay yes I totally am.

The hard truth is that this week hit like a ton of bricks. Life, as my students say, be lifin’. I haven’t approached the reelshot issue yet, I’ve halfway drawn some super-sketchy concept art for Zel, and I’ve overall been a lethargic, recuperating mass of tissues that required constant hydration and sleep. I feel much better now, though, but I’m in a big push to grade homework and lab reports before we head out tomorrow at noon for a week-long break. While I’m a game developer, I’m still very much an amateur one and I have to take care of my professional duties first.

Not that I didn’t do anything, it’s just that I didn’t do anything showy. I spent about a half-hour each day researching any links between fairies, extraterrestrials, and Appalachia that I could find. There are some, tenuous links but it’s a fantasy story, I can always expand on those in the name of lore. And man, am I going to expand on those links to an absurd degree. My approach to writing Just Beneath the Holler’s story is “too much is too much, but way too much is just right.” The research has been personally interesting, but I don’t want to reveal too much and risk having people piece together the major story beats. I think I’m sufficiently twisting and turning my way through the plot to avoid tropes, but I’m also invested in the story and may be blind to them.

Regardless, tomorrow at noon sees me embark on a week-long break full of early morning game development and, barring some catastrophe, I will be more productive then. Thank you for sticking with me through this dry period, I’ll have more exciting news by next Sunday’s devlog. Which you can totally subscribe to.

Thanks for reading!
